BoardGameGeek Forums (boardgamegeek.com) has great Civilization news, photos, videos and more
It has, in all honestly, very little civilization feeeling to it. I'd say it SoE with a civ touch to it. But it's not like I feel that I don't need to look for any Civ games anymore. The Idea of removing half your cubes from the board doesn't make sense to me in a Civ game. But I guess Martin wanted to sho...
First off is the time it takes to play. They somehow managed to take a game that is dripping with strategy and completely open information and made it play in a reasonable time frame. One thing that drives me nuts are games that take 4, 5, 12 or even more hours (Civilization) - most of us have live...
With the release of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization, the arrival of Czech games and designer Vlaada Chvátil onto the scene was underway. While a few Czech games, such as Course de la Paix, had received some attention previously, and Chvátil’s own Prophecy was fairly well receive...
In short, Rise of Empires is an empire/civilization building game that shares characteristics with among others Civilization, El Grande, Through the Ages and Wallace's previous game Struggle of Empires. Each player controls an empire and tries to build it up from the Ancient era to the...
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my games of Chariot Lords, and the only thing that stops it from getting on the table more often is playing time. It’s not a deep game, but it evokes a sweep of history and bloody conquest without the burden of a lot of overhead. I rate it a 7 with the original rules, and an 8...
As we finished, Joey came upstairs and saw us ending our game and demanded that I play a game with him. I told him it would have to wait until the morning, so at 7:30 this morning as I staggered out of bed we began another game. Joey didn't totally understand the relationship between goods and coi...
That doesn’t mean that clever designers have given up the quest for a scaled down Civ game. The recent trend is for much lighter games with a Civ theme that can be played in less than an hour. These are designs that Mike Siggins calls “super fillers”, which give you some pretty impressive gamep...
Set Up: No Minors or Privates Market: 2D stock market ORs: Small towns count as cities against train # (may upgrade $10 value in the russet) and may never upgrade to a city. No grays in Tier 2. Cities upgrade to 2 station towns in Green, only Gray tiles offer size 3 cities.
Gameplay Civilization - Tough cookie of an area to get your cubes into and even more tough once your opponent(s) get their cubes into it. You need at least one cube here or you will lose 5 points during scoring. 3) The box says 30-45 minutes and all of our games took 20 minutes or under for 2 player...
Strategy games rock. I can't guarantee that you'll like this game. Unless... you're like me and your favorite iPhone games are Uniwar and Galcon. If your favorite PC games are Age of Empires III and Civilization, then I can pretty much guarantee... you will love Imperial.
I like 18XX games, I really do. I have 8 of them in my collection (which I know makes me a real lightweight compared to real 18XX fans.), but I face the same kind of problem that I do with Frances Tresham’s other great game (Civilization), they are hard to bring to the table.
Hellas feels very much a "take that" game, for me, compared to games where you build things at a slower pace (Agricola, Race for the Galaxy, Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization,…). Battles are almost always a threat, and fights are as quick as they can be costly. After playing less aggre...
Gameplay 9/10 This is where Monkeys on the Moon shines! It's a blast to play! Setup: The start player receives the glass moonstone and starts the game! Each round is made up of two turns for each player: Civilization Turn 1)Play a Civilization Card
I have only recently rediscovered board gaming again after years of computer gaming. Kingmaker and Civilization were probably the last two board games I played before turning almost completely to computer games. Of the more memorable computer games, there was Sid Meier's Railroad Tyco...
I've always loved Civ games. Civilization brought me to board games. Vinci promised to be in the same vein, but left me unsatisfied. I've read about Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame and Tempus, and decided they were not for me. Antike scratched the expansion and conquest itch, but fel...
Gameplay The secret is, The 'Gric is really a civ-building game…It's definitely Civilization Building, only it's a MICRO-civ instead of a MACRO-civ. You build toward greater overall complexity, and those things actively interact and effect each other. The resource management is econ...
Gameplay So here is a Eurogame that appears to have been designed after the theme was decided upon--not before like many Euros. The fact that the theme and artwork reflects a particular period in history makes Confucius more "immersive" than most Euros, although it uses elegant mechanis...
Civilization the board game created by Avalon hill games in the 1980’s stands as one of the pre-eminent history of the world tales. Certainly a inspiration for Sid Meier’s award wining electronic Computer game of the same name. It bodes the question did Sid know this and use portions plager...
In my opinion Civilization or more regularly Advanced Civ (hereafter referred to as Civ)is an icon in the strategy gaming world, a precursor of good eurogaming, and something like a pilgrimage for the gamer. Every play of Advanced Civ represents a special moment when all those factors co...
Days of Wonder knows how to sell a game. They might not be the most loved publisher for gamers (That must be Ystari with their little bit overcomplicated games, Asmodée or if you’re an Eurogamer like me it’s Hans im Glück or Rio Grande overseas) but publishers of some of the most popular games...
History of Ages(Prelude) Then again, could I say myself that I am a Civilization gamer if I've never tried the game who start it all? The game who also inspired the legendary Sid Meier himself to create his amazing series? The Civilization/Advanced Civilization?
Cards? But where's my Tech Tree?=== Icons? What Icons?====== That doesn't sound like a Civ game!==== Is it just Multiplayer Solitaire?====== For those wanting something along those lines I'd recommend Twilight Imperium (it even has a tech tree!) though the theme is very different.
What’s a sample turn like? Feed your cities (dice), and resolve disasters on the dice (subtract 1-5 Victory Points) Assign workers you rolled to build monuments (VPs) or more cities (dice) This is Yahtzee: The Civ Game, NOT Civ: The Dice Game.
Well I enjoyed Through the Ages so I figured why not give Roll Through the Ages a try. I tend to like Dice games and push your luck elements but was a little weary as to how it would work in a Civilization themed game. Gameplay I give the Gameplay a 8.5/10 I really enjoy it and it is fast enough to play i...
I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to play my next game but I’m looking forward to getting this on the table again. Perhaps I’ll even be able to break out my expansion card set for Era IV, the Age of Reason. I don’t know how long that would take. In that sense, Origins shares similarities to three ga...
So, what is it about? Advanced Civilization is pretty much a game of negotiation and logistics. You move your pieces around in order to build cities and thus be able to draw more cards and, after trading, be able to buy technologies (VPs). That's the essence of it. There's more added to it, of co...
If you enjoy the economic challenges in Scepter of Zavandor, Container, Brass, and Rails of Europe, or simply love Agricola but want a bit more out of it. I also recommend it to people who love the depth of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization. The games are not technically similar, but th...
Titan is also an elimination game. What do you do in a 4 hour game if someone is eliminated an hour in? In the "old days' [tm], there might've been enough of us to start another game. We would also have it so that someone could go on the computer (and play Civ1, Warlords or Pirates).
For those unfamiliar with the game, it was developed by a few of the members of the team working on Civilization IV computer games, and was loosely based on the computer game. Civilization IV is one of the more complex computer games out there, so obviously it's pared down to the essentials.
Carcassonne: Four expansions stored in the Princess and the Dragon box 2. Do containers help for a quicker setup? (if you can sort each player’s items or separate expansions items) Contents: Mid-level: 1. Antiquity 2. Agricola 8. Civilization (you’ll need super skinny boxes to fit)

I've been an avid board gamer for years, going back to my time as a wee lad. If you see the list of games I've rated, you can get a sense of how many different kinds of games I've played. I played three games, just to make sure I wasn't missing something. Four players each time.

by scubadawg1. I'm trying to get a copy of Avalon Hill's Civilization for a friend for Christmas. I have a copy of Hasbro's Battle Cry I'll offer. If that doesn't get your interest, check my trade list.... Interested? PM me. Thanks!
I prefer "heavy" resource management games, with no or little luck, strategical more than tactical, with a lot of significant choices. Please give a look at the games I rated, to see if my tastes sync with yours, in which case a review of mine may be more useful to you... but, a warning... SA is not the...
I feel quite conflicted about Civilization. For a game designed so long ago, it truly foreshadows the tight designs of today’s Eurogames; all the various phases and rules feedback into each other in ways not readily apparent to a new player. Yet, whenever I finish a game, my first thought is...
Cards are printed on heavy, plastic stock so they should last for a long, long time. The game designer (Sid Meyer) and the rock icon (Elvis) cards have gotten new graphics to avoid infringement and copyright issues (possibly there's been some threatening noises from Elvis's estate's law...
Through the Ages hits a spot for me as only this game does. Many comparisons can and should be made to the computer game franchise Civilization, and they should be because any fan of that wonderful series will find many similarities in this boardgame and some clear differences.
The available governments and religions are a very nice addition. It forces the players to contemplate if the time is right to switch their government, for instance from Monarchy to Republic, which gives double cash for each city or village. Players must weigh the advantages of another go...
I recently attended the BPA Con and had the opportunity to play this game twice, well more than twice but I didn't take the third. Prior to attending I had high hopes for TTA, it seemed to fit with kind of thing I liked. I love Advanced Civ, I've played Civ I-IV on the computer almost religiously s...
The game follows the basic outline of any civilization game. You move stuff on the board, maybe you fight some battles, you get money, and you build stuff and buy technology. Technology determines capabilities like how big you can make your cities, or what military units you can build.
Another interesting balance is the one between population and taxation. The same counters are used to represent people and money (they are flipped over when cities are taxed). It is necessary to manage this counter supply well, because you need population on the map to support your cities...
In the end, Pocket Civ asks for some time to learn and some ink and paper. In return, you'll get a fantastic gaming experience that 15 years ago required 4-6 people, around $60 in base game and expansions, a very large table and an afternoon going well into the night.
Maybe I am a greedy gamer, but where the hell is the map? What kind of civ game doesn't have a map? WHERE IS MY CIVILIZATION LOCATED? When I read that this was a civ game without a map, I thought, oh great, here comes an overly abstracted piece of shit that claims to be civ but actually plays more l...
Building and developing buildings, population and military is also relatively simple... you need a worker free to work in your new mine, for example, so you spend food to expand the population, and resources to build a new mine for him to work in. If want the technology card to have a better mine...
I really really like the Francis Tresham's original Civilization game. In fact my only problem with it is the length of time it takes to play - other than that it's brilliant! After reading about TtA I have been eagerly waiting to get this game for about a year. I got the impression that TtA woul...
I like so-called “gamers games” which are medium weight or heavy games with a lot of strategic depth. I like virtually all the recommended games that come up in its entry, so I went ahead and bought it without having a chance to play it. Components ∙ board warping ∙ box smell Gameplay
2. Found new Cities 3. Build Fortifications to make Super Cities 4. Research Technology imageid=109989] imageid=175439] 2. Multiplayer Solitaire / Player Interaction / (Competitive / Casual) Oh, and I'm afraid for old AH Civ lovers, there's no direct player trading in Antike.
So I say to you – STOP looking for “Civ Lite”! You will not find what you are looking for! MAKE the time to play the lengthy games occasionally! Bring out Civilization or Diplomacy or 1830 or Dune or (insert favorite long game here) every once in a while. If you like these games, then nothing els...
I also never realized that Monarch/Avalon Hill was a public company. But that is neither here nor there. Not without permission, I suspect. Though "Francis Tresham's Ancient Civilizations" would probably be legal. After all "Galactic Civilizations" seems to be legal.
The $400K AH lost didn't cause the company to go under but it did hurt them. Right after they sold AH they had over 7M on hand. I am not sure if AH ever paid the $400K though. Shortly after AH lost the case, they received the Hasbro offer. All that is in the public record since MAHI was publicly traded.
Activision and Avalon Hill ended up having to stop production of Civilization games and pay damages to Microprose. A few years later Hasbro gobbled up Avalon Hill AND the remains of Microprose. But then they sold their computer division to Infogrames.
I am trying to get some of my friends interested in a full day Civ event at my house, it's been quite a few years since I last played. Trading and purchase of Cards can sometimes bog the game down. I have thought about bringing out a timer for the purchase of Civilization cards...
Among the myriad of other civ games I have played after Civilization, I have never found one to capture the essence of that classic. The concept of players controlling population token (rather than armies), capable of co-existing with the other players' token, is a stroke of genius which...
by Jim Marshall CIVILIZATION REVIEW • Buy Civilization advance cards. • Coastal or island Civilizations benefit from Astronomy, and (possibly) Cloth Making (which is a cheap card, which in the long run may not be a good thing – see point 1).
