West Karana (westkarana.com) has great EverQuest news, photos, videos and more
Well, maybe, but if you read between the lines, it’s almost certain that EverQuest Next will be a PS3/PSP release. A browser-based EQ would compete with Free Realms, and they’ve learned the lesson about competing with themselves….

Gordon of We Fly Spitfires asks how it came to be that raiding is the end-game for MMOs? Why not something else — ANYTHING else? Well, Gordon, it all began with a little game called EverQuest. The EQ devs set their level cap so impossibly high that they never expected many people to ever reach i...

Back in EverQuest, unexpected adds usually meant a group wipe (unless you were specifically doing an AE group). Crowd control or a puller who knew how to split was really important. Modern MMOs ramp down the difficulty quite a lot, and Spinks wonders if specialized crowd control has any sor...
SOE’s working on a new EverQuest, EverQuest Next. They could do far worse than to go back to basics and try to capture what made EQ special for its time. EQ has changed so much now that it’s a different game, but back then…. and as someone who last year started over from scratch, I can avow that EQ st...
RoM’s classes include Warrior, Knight, Rogue, Priest, Mage and Scout (Ranger). If you’re an elf (the only player race other than human), the recent expansion added the Druid and Warden classes. Where’s the human love, huh? Once you level to 10 in your main class, you have the option of addin...
The Friendly Necromancer spills the beans about the special PvP armor you can earn in Wizard101. -100% mana? Sounds like winning stats to me. But it does look cool, though making plate armor and metal helms kinda stretches traditional wizard-wear, doesn’t it?
Jeff Friedman, at that time an 8th grader (we assume by his offhand mention of a test in pre-algebra), with a copy of Visual BASIC and a top secret “MMORPG API” that would propel MMO development to heights unseen, announced Dawn, a groundbreaking MMO already nearing alpha test. Jeff’s inab...
Meanwhile, back at the ranch Origin Systems…. Ultima Online Worlds, 3D follow-up to the spectacularly successful (but non-3D) MMO Ultima Online, has been canceled. Asked why this title, which would have taken the Ultima MMO franchise for the first time into the 3D arena, was canceled, Or...
Aion brings its lush, saturated graphics to our shores September 22 after a summer-long beta, following WoW’s lead in that as in so much else. And again, like WoW, Aion’s North American servers will be segregated by time zone, although not by RP/Non-RP servers. Naamah of Aionic Thoughts ha...

Did ya think that onerous death penalties were a thing of the past? Not so fast. Werit finds that in Aion’s open PvP “Abyss” zone, dying in PvP can strip you of vast amounts of the PvP currency, Abyss Points, while killing someone in PvP brings far fewer. This apparently leads to people only doi...
Both WoW and EQ2 are revamping their innate racial bonuses, and the Verdant Dasypodid at Player vs Developer looks at the reasoning behind the changes, which seems to be at cross purposes. WoW is adding more fluff and less advantage to theirs, while EQ2 aims to give certain race/class comb...

IGN has some SWTOR gameplay videos hosted by Bioware peeps and I have to admit, it looks really great, a lot better than I thought it would. With Blizzcon only days away, bloggers have been speculating endlessly about rumors that the next World of Warcraft expansion will bring a complete revamping of the old world. That didn’t go over so well when EverQuest started on that path with the Prophecy of Ro and Depths of Darkhollow e...
I THINK this screen shot came while we were raiding the City of Mist for Jalanea’s shaman epic. Remember when guilds used to raid the City of Mist? Something I really liked about EverQuest was the mix of raid targets in leveling zones. Now it’s all instances and keeping people away from each ot...

Brad McQuaid continues his expose on why Vanguard failed where EverQuest succeeded with a look back at their decision to ship a game that would bring most gamers’ computers to their knees, expecting them to be eager to upgrade their computers, as the original EQ players once were. What rea...
Mr. Anderson of Juxtaposed Life wonders about Blizzard’s priest math. A few weeks ago, I got wondering how I could turn game screenshots into three dimensional images. MMORPGs would be a lot more immersive if we could see the game world in the same number of dimensions as we see the real world. It turned out to be both easier and harder than I thought.
The banner picture is of a raid dying in EQ2’s Wrath of the Elements x2 raid instance. It’s a guild raid, and the guild is Twilight Disciples, and it’s a PST raiding guild with a full roster of raiding nights, but the WoE raid was fun enough that, warning them I’d likely be missing most weeknigh...

I almost resubscribed to WoW last night. Just for a month, just so I could see some of the new places, see if the stuff the expansions added changed the game for the better. I didn’t, though, because to roll up a Death Knight and see all this cool stuff would cost me $$$ for the core game, Burning Cr...
I’m soaking in the AB ambiance. For all its fans, the tone of the chat channels is identical to Befallen and Najena. There are lots of guild recruiting, and from their various spams, I build a picture of my perfect guild. Alt-loving, casual, occasionally raids t5-t7 content for fun and AAs, gr...
Brad McQuaid continues wearing his public hair shirt of taking the piss for other people’s problems leading to the downfall of Sigil in “The All-Star Team“. Sigil hired the best and the brightest, and got a team of MMO superstars all pulling in different directions, claims Brad.
Yes, I know a WoW player is worth more than a Free Realms player. But people brag about the numbers so much, and even a FR player is worth more than a Chinese player, given the very, very, very small amount of money Blizzard makes from any given Chinese player.
By and large, MMOs have used the idea of a skilled artisan earning a living by selling the items they make as the basis for their crafting systems. Becoming a skilled crafter was so expensive and time-consuming in EverQuest that those who chose to take on a trade or two were highly prized by th...
I really hope that Antonia Bayle server will be a more relaxed, casual experience than my current home, Najena. I was goofing off last night, listening to channels, and it sounds like T2 TSO armor PLUS mythical weapon is the baseline for TSO groups now. My main, Dina, has T1 TSO + Kunark raid ar...
Inspired by the Star Wars: Galaxies news out of SOE’s Fan Faire last weekend, Werit jumped into the game after some time away and found a lot to like with the new battlegrounds, player-created content and factions wars. He even has some video!

The Bazaar is not an Auction House, like WoW, or a broker, like in EverQuest II. You don’t get to choose a price for your item. To find a similar scheme, you have to go all the way back to the original EverQuest, where people would sell things to NPC merchants, which other players could then exami...
Recently returned-to-Dungeons & Dragons Online cleric Syp discovers that pickup groups are pretty much the same everywhere, and why it’s so hard to find people to play healers when it’s clear they are among the most desired of archetypes. People in pickup groups feel free to do anyth...
I found out that Aion was built on the Crytek engine, and that implies it won’t “run on a toaster”, the famous boast Blizzard made about WoW. It doesn’t go so far as to replace the other games — EverQuest II, in particular, has far more social gameplay — but what it does, it does perfectly.
Aion is not an innovative MMO. Anybody will tell you that. And yes, you get to fly. WoW took ideas from Ultima Online, EverQuest (mostly) and Dark Age of Camelot, and made them into a single game that was greater than them all. That’s all Aion is doing here.
This was EverQuest’s second expansion, and for the first time brought a three faction war into the game, where players chose sides and earned rewards. Also appearing was Sleeper’s Tomb, which included the once-per-server event where players woke The Sleeper, the illicit child of forbi...

Most of these were hand drawn over EQ Pix pixel art dolls. I loved the sand elf outfits in Lost Dungeons of Norrath so much, I decided that I should wear one of them, too. Again, lagging behind the group as I took screen shot after screen shot.
But more excitedly, EverQuest will be adding its first new server since the progression servers. Full details below. EQ players Player information will be updated to reflect new names/guilds/servers. New servers will allow two of the same artifacts.
Let me back up. I’d unlocked the Musician job awhile ago, but had only played it just long enough to get the pet heal, then switched back to Thief, but now with pet heals and buffs. When I swapped back to Musician Saturday, my pet had leveled to 17 from adventuring with my Thief job, and so I went ki...

Spells which do not expire have been made uninterruptable. There are some exceptions which include spells which summon pets or have limited uses. This is cool. I’m not sure how USEFUL it is outside of PvP servers or as a shortcut to the Shard of Hate, but it’s good.
Next up was EverQuest 2. Unlike EverQuest, EQ2’s character creator is pretty customizable. Stout Henry would be a bruiser in EQ2 terms, and I soon had a decent looking character, except that the clothes were entirely wrong. Also, he’s a little TOO clean cut. Personal hygiene is not at the top o...
I’d THOUGHT I had gone through Allakhazam’s and gotten every spell for my paladin, same as I did for the ranger. But, no. I was missing some vital spells, and it was the lack of Invisibility to Undead that would kill me a second time. Lull just doesn’t do the job.
Stargrace’s peek into The Buried Sea expansion got me looking at the stuff they offer — even MORE armor sets! I have no clue whether we should work at some point on Dragons of Norrath armor, or hea straight to TBS armor, or see if Secrets of Faydwer has even ANOTHER set which makes the older stu...
But he couldn’t leave it alone. The introduction of Defiant armor to lure people back in with top-of-the-line, raid quality armor, has changed all that. In a stroke of a pen, SOE signed away any reason at all to explore or try difficult dungeons. Defiant armor is SO GOOD that going to Nagafen’s Lair for the 40-ish armor drop...
On Nostalgia nights, we tend to crawl through dungeons. This was not the typical way of playing EverQuest. Usually you fought your way to someplace you liked, and you STAYED there. The puller would pull, the tank would grab the aggro, and everyone would pile on. But that sort of play has fallen o...
Due to the oddities of the USPTO website, you might miss some matches, so it’s best to just look for SOE without the game name and pore through the lists. Note that some unfamiliar titles like “EVERQUEST EVOLUTION” or “EVERQUEST ATTACK ON QEYNOS” may be for omnibus collections or undevelop...
